Wainwright Walks

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Today when I visted LILID, Vishy gave me a boxed set of  Wainwright Walk (Series One and Two) by Julia Bradbury. It is a gift from his wife Priya. She picked it up for me from UK since I am interested in trekking.

After coming home, in the evening, I popped those DVDs into my computer and got a preview of the walks. Tracks are just gorgeous. I am waiting to go through the all the walks as soon as I find time. Will keep you guys posted on it.

AKT-4 Schedule

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Today my father was diagnosed for recurrence of Tuberculosis. Doctor prescribed AKT4. But many people get confused with its schedule. Here it is for everybody’s reference.

AKT 4 is a combipack of antitubercular drugs and each days treatment contains: 1 capsule of rifampicin 450 mg, 2 tablets of pyrazinamide 750 mg and 1 tablet of ethambutol 800 mg plus isoniazid (INH) 300 mg.

The rifampicin capsule should be taken empty stomach and the rest of the tablets together after breakfast every day. You should be aware that rifampicin may change your urine colour to orange and is nothing to worry about. Please follow the treatment for the duration as advised by your doctor to prevent the complication of drug resistant tuberculosis.

Note: This is a post about the schedule of AKT4. I am not a doctor and I cannot answer your queries about your health or AKT4 side effects. Please consult your local doctor. I will delete all such queries to avoid confusion. Sorry!

Akshaya Trutiya – The new trend in south

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Buying gold on Akshaya Trutiya is a new trend that has picked up in south only during recent years. Today’s newspapers are filled with ads to nudge people to buy gold. Many people believe that the amount of gold bought on this would double soon in the coming years fetching them fortune.

But I was wondering about the implications of these precious metals. Mining a single gram of gold would mean creating 5 tonnes of mining waste – that is 5000kg of mining waste. An gold earring would leave half a truck load of waste.

It is not just about environmental waste, but also the communities that get affected in the wake of our attraction to the glitter. Read this article from WorldWatch Institute for more details.

After watching Blood Diamond, I am sure, most of us would not have the tendency to buy Diamond, Gold or any other precious metal.

Are these precious metals so important to lead a happy life?

Ubuntu on my pen drive

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

I am a big fan of Ubuntu for its philosophy. It is not just its philosophy that attracts me but also the ease with which one can install the OS and the software that comes along with it.

Latest 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope is the best FOSS based OS so far. It occupies just about 700MB of space on your pen drive and gives you an OS to go with. You can boot your OS on someone else’s machine without altering one’s hard drive. You get hell lotta features and applications to go with.

I used UNetbootin to install Ubuntu 9.04 on my USB. Try it. I am sure you will love it.

Tata Book House

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

The Tata Book House at IISc has been one of my favourite places to buy technical books. I have been visiting this page since 1996. I love the place for two reasons.

  1. 20% discount on books
  2. liIISc ambience (with coffee house nearby)

I picked up four books.

  1. On the shoulders of Giants by Hawking
  2. Biology by Campbell and Reece
  3. What is Mathematics by Richard Courant and Herbert Robbins
  4. Chemistry by McMurry Fay

India Votes

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009
Sharada Prasad Voted

Sharada Prasad Voted

Today was a day of joy! I am the guy who does not believe in democracy but still one among them who suffer the effects of it.

After all the political drama in the state and at center, I developed a longing to vote for a change… I was on my K2K trip during assembly elections last year. But I was happy to see BJP come to power. I was happy to see the opportunist – HD Kumaraswamy kept at bay.

Today I had an opportunity to vote for a change in center too. I am tired of UPA’s administration. Mr.Manmohan Singh is just a puppet in the hands of Sonia. So is our President Pratibha Patil.  I am sure Ms. Patil will invite UPA to form the government at the slightest majority.

Now with Naveen Chawla being the Chief Election Comissioner, UPA is at a very good position to make/break deals. So it is left to us, the citizens, the brunt bearers, to vote, to vote for a change.

I and all my family members reached the polling booth at 8:00am today only to find that our names were not listed in the list outside the booth. I met the presiding officer and informed him about the issue. But since presiding officer had the latest revised list, he could easily locate our names and allowed us to vote.

When I went to the electronic voting machine, I was surprised to see totally different names of the candidates. I soon realized that since we reside near the line of demarcation, our constituency falls under Bangalore rural and not Bangalore south. I immediately made my choice and cast my vote. In three weeks, I would know whether I am at the winning end or the losing one. But I will not repent. I made the best use of the opportunity I had to create change – I voted for a national party!

On my way back I witnessed one of the most resposible citizens – an 80 year old man strugling to get out of a car. The old man strggled to stand and walk. But he made it to the booth and voted. This is the spirit you need to create change, to create a better India.

Why do you need Windows?

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I and many of my colleagues have been using Ubuntu desktop for a while. We all are pretty happy with the features and applications that come with ubuntu.

Many of my friends still use Windows – though their activity is still limited to checking emails, creating documents and presentations, watching videos and listening to music.

People are willing to adopt piracy as compared to embracing FOSS. Strange indeed.

Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope will be with us in less than 12 hours. The light is here. I don’t know why people are still groping in darkness.
