Borewells – either functional or non-functional – always lead to disasters.
Owners of functional borewells suck out water from the aquifers without any conscience. India is a country that heavily relies on groundwater. Government is not interested in regulating GW since GW has allowed government to escape from its duty of providing quality water to its people – either for domestic or irrigational purposes. 85% of GW is used for farming and is used inefficiently. People who use GW for domestic purposes don’t care much about the quality of the water as long as the quantity meets their needs. GW has been the main vector of diseases related to fluoride, arsenic, iron and even nitrate. At one end government has failed to regulate GW and at the other end it does not want to educate people about ill-effects of ground water. Decades ago GW quality was not a problem. But now people have started digging deeper since shallow aquifers have disappeared. Where shallow aquifers still exist, they are contaminated by sewage water. So GW is turning to be a dangerous concoction.
The story of non-functional borewells in India is equally tragic… instead of water, they suck lives. (more…)
