A loud good morning :)

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

The city bus dropped me at the Hulimavu gate today at around 6AM. I spotted an auto at the gate. The driver was drinking tea. I asked him to drop me at ‘Akshayanagar’. As usual, it was a clear NO. Considering the fact that it was early in the morning, I agreed to pay him double the fare. He was happy. He finished his tea, lit a cigarette and sat on his driver seat. I told him that I would not like cigarette smell. I waited till he could finish his smoke.

When he dropped me at my house, the meter read Rs.25.5 (4.3KM). Actual distance to my house is exactly 3.25 from the gate. I told him that the meter reading is wrong and would not pay him more than Rs.22. Since I had agreed upon paying him twice the meter reading, I paid him Rs.44. The driver picked up a fight. Initially I was calm trying to explain him the things. But later on I had to raise my voice and that turned the faces of my neighbors.

I was feeling awful because we were fighting over Rs.6. But I was furious that he was cheating every passenger by clocking the distance falsely (30% extra money was involved). The fight went on and driver left with Rs.44. The fight upset my parents. My father later scolded me and said that I must have paid the driver off. Even I felt so in the end. I give away money out of sympathy. But when someone tries to rob me through cheating, I lose my tolerance.

Beg, if you want, but don’t cheat.

6 weeks ago Vijay forwarded me a mail. It was from MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), Chennai. The subject of the mail was “”

I was asked to attend the workshop and understand how India Water Portal contents like multimedia courses and other things could be effectively used in Village Knowledge Centers (VKCs). The assignment was quite challenging. I was not aware of ICT4D concept. I did not even know the expansion of abbreviations such as ICT, PRI etc.

But I started with the report of Mission 2007 third annual convention. The

Chennai and its love for Tamil

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I boarded the KSRTC bus at 11:00PM yesterday. Bus driver kept the radio locked on to 98.3 MHz… Slowly I dozed off to the beautiful kannada songs. At around 6:30AM today at the same frequency I could listen to songs of Tamil – I was in Chennai. Immediately I searched for different radio channels on FM band. I could find some 9 channels. Not even a single channel was airing non-tamil programs.

I was thinking about the kind of freedom/choice people have in Bangalore – English, Hindi and Kannada. You can listen to the music you enjoy, you can listen to the language you can comprehend. Non-Tamilian people at Chennai have no choice. Language kills you along with the weather :)

True freedom is providing people with choices and allowing them to make one. Tamilians may be happy with all this – but for a non-tamilian, it is not a very pleasant experience since it does not reflect the true spirit of independance.

Yesterday was world environment day. 2 days have passed since my return from Himalayan Trek. At Goumukh I could see how global warming had melted down and still melting down larger mass of ice. The droplets reminded me of a sand clock. I felt hopeless and helpless at the same time. I decided to minimize my contribution to the greenhouse effect. 2 days in a month I must use my bicycle. 2 days in a month I mus use public transport. I have decided to implement my rule of using bicycle for any of errands within 3 km from my house.

Today I took out my bicycle and peddled down to office. It took me about 85 minutes to reach office. I usually take 45 minutes by my bike. During peak hours I take 85 minutes to reach office.

Today I felt happy that I did not contribute much towards the pollution.
