Location is the only way forward

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I am a strong believer in location information. What is the point in talking about an issue, community or anything for that matter if we cannot pinpoint their location on Earth?

GeotaggingW is, simply said, tagging location information to an object – the object could be an image or a post office. But geotaggingW in photography is picking up since the entire process of capturing the location information (latitude, longitude, altitude and orientation) has been simplified since it can be directly written into EXIFW data of the image.

I am a big fan of geotagging and the next few paragraphs I want to explain how to geotag photographs and create history :) (more…)

Photographs for my blog

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Ever since I lost my camera during my K2K trip last year, I have lost interest in photography. I think it is high time I start carrying a compact camera around and start taking candid pictures. Everyday I come across many interesting situations and they are best captured in a camera.

Two days back I wanted to capture the picture of a motorcycle stuck in traffic jam. The bike had no place to even wiggle on the road. On the bumper there was a sticker saying – “Yes, my dad owns the roads” :)

Two weeks back I was on my way home, cycling. Had to ride through heavy rain. It was horrifying to see the extent of water logging in Koramangala area. Wanted to click some snaps.

Yesterday witnessed a beautiful rainbow from silkboard flyover… no luck with snaps.

Many a times I don’t blog just because I don’t have the right pictures to support the post. Time to take out my Olympus point and shoot camera.

From now on you can expect more :)

Largest collection of GPS trails of India

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Ever since I have completed my K2K motorcycle ride, I have been shortlisting photographs and tweaking GPS tracks. I have been uploading the photographs to Flickr and GPS tracks to EveryTrail.

Since all my photographs are geotagged, I believe that till date, my collection is the most diverse and completely geotaggedphotographs of India. Also, the largest collection of GPS tracks/trails of India (not numbers but distance and place wise) can be found under my profile in EveryTrail.

Here is a simple example of my trip output: (more…)

Reverse Geocoding

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Geocoding is a method of assigning lat long info to objects. The new ‘Reverse Geocoding’ is picking the lat long info from an object e.g. a photograph, and looking for name of the place, country etc. related to that info.

I use RoboGeo to process my pictures and upload them to Flickr. RoboGeo offers ‘reverse geocoding’.

My photos on Google Earth

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Today I found out that my Brahmagiri trek photos have been added to Panoramio layer of Google Earth.

Open Google Earth,  Enable Panoramio layer. Search for Srimangala, India. Move to south west of that location and you will find my snaps…

Man! Technology rocks!!!!

Purchased Flickr Pro Account

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Today I purchased two year Flickr Pro account. Flickr is very intelligent. It knows how to limit users and compel them to get a Pro Account.

RoboGEO

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Geotagging your photographs could get messy sometimes. Though I have GPS receiver, D300 and necessary interface cables, I prefer not to connect my GPSr to D300 as the set up gets bulky. The other option is to use a software to synch up the GPSr tracklog with the timestamps of the photographs.

I decided to use and purchased a license for the same. RoboGEO offers lot of flexibility. Check their website

Nandi Hills – Arkavathi Janadesha Padayatra

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Today I along with nine of my friends (Diwi, Chitra, Parthibha, Vishy, Priya, Ravi, Subhash, Nagasreenivas and Amitangshu) left for Nandi Hills.

We reached Nandi Hills at around 7:30 AM. We missed the sun rise. But we could spend about 3 hours practicing random photography.

From there we arrived at Chickarayappanahalli for the inaugural function of Arkavathi Janadesha Padayatra. The function started at around 12:00Pm and ended at 2:30 with lunch. The walk followed. Nagasreenivas and Amitangshu joined the walk while rest of us spent some time in the catchment area and reached Bangalore at around 8:00PM
