WASE – Wipro Academy of Software Excellence is an innovative way to exploit people. Few of my friends have joined Wipro as WASEians. Here is my simple comparison of how it works out better to Wipro to have such people on board. Here goes the deal.
WASEians are people who come straight out of college with a bachelor’s degree either in science (BSc) or computer applications (BCA). For these people, WASE facilitates an MS program from BITS Pilani. It pays their tuition fee for eight semesters amounting to Rs.1,40,000 (Rs.17,500 * 4) in all spread across four years.
Wipro also pays stipend – First year Rs.9000 per month, Second year Rs.11,500 per month, Third year Rs.16,700 per month and Fourth year Rs.21,500 per month.
In all, for four years,
Rs.1,40,000 (Tuition fee) +
Rs.11,000 (One Time Application fee) +
Rs.1,08,000 (First Year Stipend)+
Rs.1,38,000 (Second Year Stipend) +
Rs.2,00,400 (Third Year Stipend)+
Rs.2,58,000 (Fourth Year Stipend)
= Rs.8,55,400
While a conventional software engineer in Wipro would earn Rs.20,000 first year, Rs.25,000 second year, Rs.28,500 third year and Rs.32,000 fourth year (as per current industry standards).
In all, on a conventional candidate, Wipro spends,
Rs.2,40,000 (First Year Salary) +
Rs.3,00,000 (Second Year Salary) +
Rs.3,42,000 (Third Year Salary) +
Rs.3,84,000 (Fourth Year Salary)
= Rs.12,66,000 (almost 50% more than what it spends on a WASEian)
So Wipro is saving at least Rs.4,00,000 per WASEian. This business started 10 years back. This year alone Wipro has recruited around 2000 WASEians (which is a saving of Rs.80 crores in four years – Rs.20Cr annually) and has plans to increase this number in the coming years. Why wouldn’t it do so when it can save so much on each WASEian?
Now WASEians have Rs.75,000 bond with the company. If any WASEian tries to quit WIPRO before the completion of four years, he/she has to forego that money. Every WASEian works as any other conventional engineer putting 11-14hrs of work each day.
WASEians don’t have any sick leaves – just 15 days off every year for all the four years. No compensatory offs (Comp-Off) even though many work on Sundays. WASEians cannot work on Saturdays – not that Wipro does not want them to, but because they have classes on Saturday. So technically some WASEians would have no break for the entire week few times a year.
While a conventional engineer will have lot more flexibility (comp-offs) and more number of leaves (each year the number increases).
Throughout four years the designation of a WASEian would be – ‘Student, Computer Application’ while that of an average convetional engineer would be ‘Senior Software Engineer’.
The best of all clauses is – after four years, a WASEian will be given a course completion certificate though he/she would have slogged almost to death. A conventional engineer would get an experience letter which would earn him/her at least 30% hike in other companies.
So it is clear that WASE is a way to exploit the hapless students in the name MS program.
I request WIPROites / ex-WIPROites / WASEians to comment on my perception. If I am right, then I am sure that Mr.Azim Premji has not worked out this equation. Else he would try to stop this exploitation. Wouldn’t he?

hello everyone i got selected for wase iam doing my final year Bsc computer science.I have confusion on joining wase because i have also compleated GNIIT(Software engineering) at NIIT Nungambakkam.is wipro gives correspondence certificate or regualar. If get job form NIIT and do MCA in coresspondence it is valued or after compleating MCA i will be considered as only Bsc in industry please explain me.some people say that if i do correspondence MCA i cant able to cross some certain amount of salary in my life.
@shankaranarayanan
Go with WASE. WASE certificate is not any useless correspondence certificate. WASE program candidates are respected across the industry. MCA salaries are almost at par with BE salaries. Certain companies even pay higher since MCA is considered as a PG course while BE is just bachelor’s
hello sharada prasad. one new information about WASE.
Before the rule followed in wipro is that after compleating wase our work experience will be 0 student computer application.
wipro has a policy of giveing red tag to its employees after five years they join wipro and red tag after 10 years. But waseians will not be given red tag after compleating wase and one year with wipro.
but now wipro has changed its policy to give red tag to waseians after compleating wase + one year work expeirance with wipro. Its good
Well, I got selected for Wipro WASE program on October 2008 ( I got the enrollment letter and waiting for the Call letter ) .Now, I am really confused with people’s opinion over this program, right here . Weather I can join that program or continue my higher studies, like MCA or MBA ?
Is it a good chance for me ? a great opportunity ?? what shall I do ?
hi..
i got placed in wipro wase in yr 2008.. i thought of joinig the wase , but after reading the comments i am confused whether to go wit wase or not.. actually i am interested in higher studis , bur i want to be independent too. thats the reason i wanted to join the wase but i ma confused now..
can anyone help me regarding the following doubts:
Wase is providing us Ms degree from Bits Pilani.. till where it is known and useful for us? what is its use in future?
after working for 4 yrs in wase will they provide us a experience certificate ? if not then which all certificates we will be given at the completion of wase program? are they useful if we go for some other company for a job after 4 yrs..?
we have only 15 days of leave per yr till 4 yrs.. what if the person is very serious and admitted in hospital due to his/her sickness? since there is no leave for sickness, what if the person meet with an accident or he /she gets the severe disease like chickenpox, measles etc?
will they call us on Sundays also….? this is too much , at least we need one day off in a week….every Sunday they will ask us too come or sometimes?
after 4 yrs i.e after the completion of MS if i go to other company for job how much they will offer me, or if i want to continue in wipro itself then how much wipro will offer me..?
my questions may seems funny… but please do reply .. please help me….
@Srivigneshwar
WASE is a decent program. You will not regret it.
@zulanaa
Please read through other comments for answers.
Working on Sundays is project dependent.

@Rahul
I am sorry. I am not the person who can answer your question. Please contact WIPRO.
@pooja
I am sorry to hear that. Note that WASE takes four years while MCA takes just three. The compromise you make with time will help you earn some stipend at WIPRO and also get good handson experience. Above all, you are already employed by WIPRO. No need to to look for opportunities just as you would do after completing MCA.
Regarding whether there will be new recruitments for WASE, I am not the person to answer this question.
Dear All,
I have shared my experiene earlier also while being in Wipro at this forum. I never found WASE as of any benefit for myself and finally I quit it on 22nd May 2009 after having wasted 2 years and 7 months.
You would wonder if I thought it was a waste then why did I continue for such a long time, well that is a good question, but I had to buy some time since I was working in SAP technology and seeing the market trend, I was aware that I can not find a job in SAP if I have an exp less than 2 years.
In all those years in Wipro, it was like I was put in a concenteration Camp, I have not found any of my fellow WASEian who is happy with WASE but still they continue in want of other options or the bond.
I was fortunate enough to get a BOND Waiever since I resigned in recession, but not sure about the kind of experience letter or so called testimonial I will get , I am still waiting to get one. I can’t trust Wipro to do justice as I have seen all immoral practices happening over there.
I would like to expand WASE as Wipro Academy of Serious Exploitation.
Hi,
need to know more about this program..please can anyone help?
This link should help – http://careers.wipro.com/wase/index.htm
hey Sharada,
Could you please forward me e-mail id’s or phone numbers(delhi nos. if pssble) of any WASEians to whom i can talk…. thanks:)
I have got the offer to WASE, and the same time, I also got the state 119th rank for MCA/MBA entrance exam in Andhra Pradesh. I can easily get the seat in JNTU where I can do my MCA for 3 years. But the question is, if I have to choose WASE or go for the MCA degree. I was informed that I would be joining the MS program in Jan,2010. So, 48 month period is calculated from that period-which lets me complete my WASE in 2014. But my MCA gets completed in May,12. I just want to know if going to WASE yields me more or going to MCA in University campus will yield me more. I also want to know the salary a student of WASE gets after the successful completion of the program.
Sorry, it is May,2012; not May,12. I have also a doubt to get clarified. If I get the MS degree from WASE program, will it be recognized if I am interested in doing my Ph.D in Computer Sciences in a reputed university like Oxford, Cambridge etc in the future.
I had completed my BCS and i am going to join WASE on 10 OCT 09 but after reading all post i am confused what to do can u help me what is future after 4 years.i can get admission to well reputed college for MCA .so help me what should i do join WASE or go for MCA.
HI SHRADDHA
well i m a wase student…i think what ever calcuations that u have made misght be correct but ur making one little mistake here that is ..ur are com[paring an IT graduate with an engineer…we all knw that getting a BE degree takes a lot more than getting BscIT n BE degree is also much more valued than bscIT…so be ppl are tend to be paid higher than a bscIT…coz a BE after all is always placed at a higher point….what we need to see here is…making a comparision between a BscIT wase student n a normal bscIOT student i think a normal bscIT student after graduation had athe option of goin fr either mba mca or msc(which hs not as much value as Ms from BITS)…for going fr mba or mca the student will have to devote one fr CET(if he wished to get in a good institute) thn the curse completion would take two year…n totally after three years whn the person passes out with a masters in hand he will be hired as a trainee will be paid around 20k(maybe less nw coz of reccession) which the same 21,500 as what the wase student are getting paid after 3 years of joinning plus one year after that we will recieve an Ms degree from BITS which is known as one of the premium institues in india..at the level of IIT institutes….so unlike the mca mba students who have invested their money in getting their resp degrees…we have earned as well as gt a Ms degree frm BITS plus we HAVE AN EXPERIENCE FROM ONE OF THE TOP it COMPANIES IN INDIA..NW WAT MRE CAN U ASK FOR??…..even after that we have an option either to leave n join another company n also to prsue mba further which may still raise our standards in IT industry…so i think talking abt bscIT ppl thiis is the best oppotunity that u might ask for n donnot let it goo…
N TALKING ABOUT EXPLOITATION N SLOGGING I THINK EVERYONE HAS TO STRUGGLE FOR SM YEARS IN LIFE O HAVE A GOOD CAREER….N AS FAR AS I THINK IF I AM GETTING GOOD KNWOLEDGE N EXPERIENCE I DONT MIND BEING LABELLED A STUDENT…COZ AFTER GETTING THE DEGREEN EXPERIENCE UR TEND TO GET A GUD POST…AND EXPLOITATION IS CARRIED OUT EVERYWHERE EVEN COMPANIES LIKE ACCENTURE N INFOSYS MAKE THEIR EMPLOYEES WORK FOR 12-14 HRS….
THATS ALL I HAVE TO SAY THANKU
People , please try to hail Wipro for providing such a wonderfull opportunity. Even I m a WASIAN and I strongly say that Wipro is a land of opportunity and it shapes the career of an individual in a beautiful way.
Try to appreciate things rather than critizing it.
Long live Wipro and WASE.
Can any one say that what will be our position after 4years? Can we go and apply for being a lecturer in a college? or we have to stick to hardcore IT market? Moreover, this MS course is not AICTE approved..In that case, won’t it make a big difference?
hello,
I am doing my B.sc computer science final year.I want to know whether WASE really help us… i read all the above comments but can’t come to a right conclusion…
what i understood is,
1.)It is use full who want’s to gain experience.
2.)It’ll not be useful who want’s to earn more.
3.)It is a better option for the persons who can work hard.
but i want to know whether
1.) Is it a better option for who can able to do MCA?
2.)Will it be beneficial than joining it industry after completion of MCA in a good reputed institute?
3.)what will be salary for an MCA student after 3 years(just say an approx scale).
can any one help me to clarify these doubts…
hey hi to every one pls people tell any one something abt wase interview
its urgent people
Hi,
I am a final year wasian am in my 7th sem..
I would suggest if u need both experience and higher studies then u can prefer wase.
Bcoz, During ur study itself u will gain the experience too..
yes, it will be very difficult to pursue both but result will be fruitful…
I have following queries:
1. The MS degree that we will get after 4 years, is that a correspondence one or the regular one?
2. Even if its a regular degree the fact that BITS is not an AICTE approved college, would the degree have value in IT industry?
3. Will Wipro provide the Waseian’s their lodging and food facilities or we ourselves have to accommodate for that?
Hi friends!!!
Today first time i m reading your opinions on wase, and i m really fan of yours!!!
I m BSc(cs) with 68% and will passout in 2010. I m selected for wase. My parents allows me do whatever I want. Now I am unble to decide whether to choose mca/mcs or wase.
Please Help me out to choose the right way
sir,
is it easy to balance both the work and study in the 4 years?
Wase is a gr8 program.
In IT industry an experienced person is preferred over a non experienced one. So,joining wase will give u work exp+MS degree(well recognised in the industry)
@topic starter: Wipro is saving xyz crores annually doesnt mean WASE is not a good program.
Secondly,a wasean will get a MS DEGREE (from BITS) and not a course completion certificate(please dont misguide)
Hi kavya…
I’m a Wase student doing my 2nd year…
MS Degree from BITS is a Regular Certificate only which is a dream of more ppl like me…
So dont be confused…
But 1 thing i want to say is if they posted u in Chennai, then ask for transfer to Bangalore or Pune…
Bcz in Chennai, the exams are very tough to pass…
But in Bangalore its good to study and get reasonable marks…
In Pune its very easy to score high marks in MS…
The grades u score in MS will speak in wipro after the completion of MS…
you can get paid more (Rs 35000 0r 37000 Or 40,000 depenging on ur grades)…
So…
All the best…
@ Rohan : MS degree from BITS , Pilani is easily one of the most recognized and sought after college degree … Yes , even we were apprehensive about this particular glitch … What kind of a degree is WASE providing us … After a careful bit of research and with proper dialogues with people concerned (read BITS Alumni and Professors) we were satisfied that indeed MS degree holds a lot of value in the recruiter’s eyes and coupled with a 4 years exposure to IT Industry .. its a potent combination
@rahul and @geetha
Its nice to see positive response from you people.Actually,i was confused whether to join WASE or not but now i have made my mind to join WASE!!
Thanks
Morever,i wanted to ask, is it too hectic working and studying together?
And also can a average performer (in college/school academics) can complete WASE?
hi… i am studing in b.c a 2nd year.i have done 12th in commerce with computer science.i had not maths as subject in 12.is i am eligible for wase m.s degree??i realy want to do this innovative course.
hi evryone i have selected for wase program.. i would like to know ‘
1) is there any lodging or boarding facilities wipro would provide in banglore or we have to stay out
2)do we have any recreation programs other than studies and work
Now wipro also provides 5 days of sick leave for waseans(same as that of other wipro employees)…..also provided little increase in stipend ranging from 1000rs. for 1st years to 2000rs. for 4th years…(This change is from apr’10)……
could anyone confirm whether the MS degree from BITS is AICTE approved or not??
@ Rahul
Thanks a lot bro..
Another thing which i want to know is that do we have to sign any bond of
Rs. 75000/- ?
Hi all,
WASE is good for persons who are willing to study(PG) while earning..At the same time we cannot judge or predict that its not a good pitch for persons, who can able to continue their higher Studies after their Bsc’s..Its up to the individual…If we are looking here for Overall benefit for a graduate..Yes.,its beneficial..
Continuing further studies is based on the situation of that individual. So, ball is in that individual’s court.
As such, experience which you are gaining cant be predicted.,varies person to person.
As of my experience its out of one’s own self Initiative,Interest and Involvement towards the role which they are getting. This applicable to their studies also, irrespective of location where they are studying..
Lets say Wipro gains out of it..But, we have to also accept a fact is that..In some or other way its giving surplus chance to enrich the career of an individual.
I feel this is the Unique reason for the success of this program…from ’95
Even more MNC’s are followers nowadays..
After completion,We can continue from any field based on gaining MS and Experience..
Thanks.
